Spring cleaning LVT: How to remove ingrained dirt effectively

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) has become a staple in modern homes, recognised for its ability to mimic natural wood and stone but with the durability of tiles. However, even the toughest floors show the rigours of daily life over time. Muddy footprints, pet paws, and general household grime can create a layer of ingrained dirt that a quick mop simply cannot shift.

When dirt becomes trapped in the texture of the vinyl, the floor loses its lustre and can start to look permanently grubby. If your flooring has lost its spark, it doesn’t need replacing. With the right technique and products, removing ingrained dirt is a straightforward process that can restore your floor to showroom condition.

Understanding LVT flooring

To clean LVT effectively, it helps to understand the material you are working with. LVT is engineered with multiple layers, typically consisting of a backing layer for stability, a photographic design layer that provides the aesthetic, and a clear, protective wear layer on top.

Leading brands like Amtico also include a urethane coating to provide resistance against scuffs and stains. Whilst this construction makes LVT incredibly water-resistant and durable, the textured surface, which is what creates the realistic look, can sometimes trap dirt. Using incorrect tools or harsh chemicals can strip away the protective wear layer, making the floor more susceptible to damage. Treating the surface with care is the key to longevity.

Regular cleaning

The best way to deal with ingrained dirt is to prevent it from building up in the first place. Dust and grit act like sandpaper under your feet, and every time you walk on a dirty floor it grinds those particles into the surface.

To prevent this, here is a two-step routine:

  1. Daily sweeping: Use a soft-bristled broom or a vacuum cleaner with a hard floor setting or soft brush. Ensure your vacuum does not have a ‘beater bar’ active, as this can scratch the vinyl.
  1. Weekly mopping: Use a microfibre mop and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid steam mops, as the intense heat can damage the adhesive and the tiles themselves.

If you have Amtico flooring, we recommend using Amtico Floorcare Maintainer when mopping. This product is specially formulated to clean the floor without leaving a dulling residue or stripping the protective layer.

Identifying ingrained dirt

If you have just mopped the floor but it still looks dull, flat, or slightly discoloured, you likely have ingrained dirt and need to perform a deep clean. This accumulation often happens in high-traffic areas like by entry ways, hallways and kitchens. The common culprits for causing this are:

  • Grease and oil: Cooking residue that settles on the floor and acts as a magnet for dust.
  • Pet mess: Muddy paws and shedding fur that get trodden into the grain.
  • Mud: Dirt tracked in from muddy boots and cold weather settle in the small spaces between the grains.
  • Old product buildup: Using too much detergent or ‘mop and shine’ products can leave a sticky film that traps dirt.

Guide to removing ingrained dirt

When regular mopping isn’t enough, you need to strip the floor back and refresh it. This process removes the old protective dressing along with the trapped dirt.

  1. Select the right solution

Do not use bleach, vinegar, or abrasive scouring powders. These can permanently damage the surface. Instead, use a specialised stripping solution, such as Amtico Floorcare Stripper.

  1. Test first

Before applying any chemicals to your floor, test it in an inconspicuous area (like a corner or under a sofa) to ensure there is no adverse reaction.

  1. Remove loose debris

Thoroughly sweep or vacuum the area to ensure surface dust and debris is gone.

  1. Apply the stripper

Dilute your stripping solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply it liberally to the floor using a mop. The floor should be wet but not flooding. If you’re using Amtico Floorcare Stripper, leave the solution to work for approximately 10 minutes.

  1. Agitate and rinse

After 10 minutes, use a non-abrasive pad or a soft brush to gently agitate the surface. This helps lift the dirt from the texture of the tile. Then remove the dirty liquid with a mop and rinse the floor with clean, warm water. When using the Amtico Floorcare Stripper, it’s best to rinse the floor twice to remove any chemicals still lingering.

  1. Apply fresh dressing

Once the floor is 100% dry, it will look very clean but slightly matte. This is because you have stripped the old dressing. To protect your Amtico floor and bring back the finish, apply a fresh coat of Amtico Floorcare Dressing. Apply a thin, even coat, let it dry for 30 minutes, and then apply a second coat at a right angle to the first and allow to dry for a further 30 minutes.

Maintenance tips to prevent ingrained dirt

Once you have restored your floor, a few habitual changes can keep it cleaner for longer and reduce the chances of you having to strip it.

Protecting the legs of your furniture by sticking felt pads to the bottom of chairs and tables prevents scratches where dirt can easily accumulate.

Placing doormats at every entrance helps trap direct and moisture before it is tracked across the house. Amtico suggests using their Indoor Cotton Mats which are specially designed for this. If you are using a different mat, make sure it’s not rubber-backed, as these can sometimes stain vinyl.

Although LVT is water-resistant, you must clean spills instantly, as leaving liquids (especially coloured ones like wine or coffee) to sit can eventually lead to staining. It’s best to grab a damp cloth and wipe them up swiftly before it’s too late.

Good as new

Reviving a tired-looking LVT floor does not require professional machinery, just the right products and a bit of patience. By performing an annual deep clean to remove ingrained dirt, you reset the clock on your flooring and bring back a hygienic and stylish feature of your home.

Whilst you have the option to strip it back, regular sweeping and the use of protective mats can prevent the build-up of ingrained dirt and will save you effort in the long run.
